I originally posted one of these playlists at mid-year, but it’s been a huge year for new music, so it was time to update the playlist. Now, I don’t know how you felt about 2014, but for me, it was probably the best year of the decade so far for music.
When I put together playlists, or just lists of songs, I don’t normally take the time to rank them. This time around, I had some pretty strong opinions, so at least the top 10 songs here are in the order that I think they deserve to be. I also tried to limit my choices to only one song per artist. Would some of these artists have had more than one song on this list otherwise? It’s definitely a possibility.
Making it’s debut tonight after a special Meltdown edition of @Midnight on Comedy Central is the brand new comedy series The Meltdown With Jonah and Kumail. Shot at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles, this new weekly series is hosted by Jonah Ray (Jonah Raydio, The Nerdist podcasts) and Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley).
The first episode features stand-up performances from Steve Agee, David Koechner, Neal Brennan and Moshe Kasher, with Jonah and Kumail serving as your comedy masters of ceremony (MC Jonah and MC Kumail, may I suggest?).
This week marks an overall change in the way I’ll be putting together these weekly playlists from now on. The original idea was to have one playlist that people would subscribe to and then each week it would be wiped out and a new batch of songs would take their place. On paper, it was a good idea because nobody ever has to subscribe to more than one playlist, but then it eventually started to have an effect on the prior weeks’ blog posts, which contained links to those specific playlists (and the list of songs) but the actual songs would no longer match up. If that makes sense, then let’s move on.
Starting this week, we not only got our own domain (cuterthanpie.com) but I actually went back through every previous post and cleaned up all the links, videos and playlists. From now on, every past edition of The Weekly Dose will be available to listen to on this site. However, there is a new master Spotify playlist that I’d recommend everybody subscribe to. All previous tracks can be found there (currently around 100 songs so far) and it will be updated each week with the latest edition.
Finally, before we head into this week’s playlist, I want to thank everybody for the support over the last couple of weeks. Not only did we move to a new domain name, but we’ve been averaging over 100 hits a day (and broke a record last week with a one day total of 465 views).
Well, I will admit that I didn’t see this one coming. Weird Al today released the final video in his #8videos8days promotion, and it’s an animated music video for the song “Mission Statement”.
The song is done in the style of Crosby, Stills and Nash, and features rich harmonies basically singing a company’s mission statement, and all the corporate jargon that goes with it. On the album, this one is interesting to me because while I can definitely get into the music of it, and all of Al’s harmonies blended together, I usually just end up tuning out the words because they are not particularly funny. Maybe that’s the point.
